SEO Mistakes to avoid

Splash Page

Many people put up just a big banner image and a link “Click here to enter” on their homepage. The worst case — the “enter” link is embedded in the Flash object, which makes it impossible for the spiders to follow the link. This is fine if you don’t care about what a search engine knows about your site; otherwise, you’re making a BIG mistake. Your homepage is probably your website’s highest ranking page and gets crawled frequently by web spiders. Your internal pages will not appear in the search engine index without the proper linking structure to internal pages for the spider to follow.Your homepage should include (at minimum) target keywords and links to important pages.

What are Google Sitelinks?
In 2005 Google started experimenting with an enhanced listing in their natural search results that can increase a site’s visibility and reputation, and provide more traffic. For a long time we didn’t know what to call these deluxe listings, but now we do. On September 7, 2006, Google’s sitemap guru, Vanessa Fox, wrote a blog entry titled Information about Sitelinks. She explained that Sitelinks are generated automatically, and that Sitelinks are designed to provide searchers with more valuable search results. Fox also said that Google will be expanding the Sitelinks program. Since then we’ve been getting many questions from webmaster interested to know how they can get a Sitelinks listing.

Internet Plate Like Licence Plate !!

Basically, you have an invisible license plate when you go on the internet with your computer. This is called your IP. Think of it like an “Internet Plate” for your computer that you drive around the internet with. This is why websites that you visit know things about you, like where you are from and what sort of operating system you are using along with how many times you visit. So what is Google doing with your IP now? They are giving results based on your location! Before, if you searched for a term like “car repair”, you would get results simply based on who markets themselves the best online and their location could be any where in the world. Now, Google is incorporating where you, the searcher, are in the world to show you relevant local results. So, in essence, if you are in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and search for “car repair”, you will get results from local “car repair” websites in your search results. In my opinion, this is great for local business and may eliminate the need for expensive advertising in local Yellow Pages. It’s now easier than ever to rank high on Google for local business terms!

Squidoo is a web 2.0 site which is almost completely made up of user generated content. Users, known as lensmasters, create single page websites called lenses which can be customized with the addition of various types of modules such as video, Amazon, and voting modules. Lenses are given lensranks by a proprietary algorithm which is obviously kept under wraps, much like the Google algorithm is kept secret. The factors which are generally understood to have a positive impact on a lens’ lensrank are things like traffic, quality content, lens ratings, how often users share the lens with others, and more.

Now, a lot of modern websites have dropped the sitemap page, instead they place the sitemap in the footer area.
